December 2020 – News from Blue Spruce Assisted Living

Well 2019 may have been a remarkable year but it was nothing compared to  2020. It has been an amazing year at our Castle Pines / Castle Rock facility and we are extremely grateful to all the residents, families and service provider partners who have helped make this year such a blessing. We are particularly grateful to all of our families, friends and vendors who helped us through this challenging period and helped ensure that we remained Covid free till now. We are pleased to have been able to be a small part of our residents lives and we look forward to continuing to provide care to our residents for the balance of 2020 and beyond.

 Interesting Newspaper articles

As we watch our loved ones age, and we at Blue Spruce are fortunate enough to care for them, it continues to remind me that we, as their children, are not getting any younger. I found this article in the BBC recently very interesting. A more recent article, from January 2020, reminds us how healthy habits can deliver additional disease free years. That article can be found here.

This BBC article has interesting ideas about cycling for the elderly with dementia.

On the other hand, here is a warning about recognizing the warning signs of dementia.

Its wonderful to live in a state with a vibrant economy like that of Colorado. However the downside is that the shortage of caregivers continues to be an ongoing challenge for the elderly. The attached article gives and interesting alternative being tried in Minnesota.

And here is a very cute article about ageing. 

And an interesting article from the AARP about caring for loved ones at home.

The BBC News continues to have interesting articles about alzheimer’s and early detection.

December 2017 articles included “Turkey blunder a potential dementia sign” as well as a very interesting one “The part of my dad that dementia can’t take“.

The most interesting one remains this one regarding blood test research for early detection of the disease. Another study, also posted in BBC News, identified early genetic markers for Alzheimers risk.

Castle Rock Senior Center – December 2020

The Castle Rock Senior Center, Inc., was first started by a small group of people in Douglas County as a Senior Citizen Club in late 1971. We have evolved into a non-profit 501(C)3 organization with a present membership of nearly 1,000.

Highlands Ranch Seniors Club – December 2020

The Highlands Ranch Senior Club provides a social network for HRCA members 50 and older to meet new friends, socialize, and have fun. The Club sponsors activities in the Senior Lounge, at the Highlands Ranch Recreation Center at Southridge, and a monthly luncheon, in addition to various trips and outings. Parker Senior Center – December 2020

The Town of Parker has a very active Senior Center located at 10675 Longs Way, Parker, CO.

The Parker Senior Center is currently closed with no scheduled date for reopening. We will keep you updated as we hear of any progress. There are typically numerous daily activities in a month that can be found here.

Four years ago, Pat Bowlen, owner of the Denver Broncos, announced that he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with him and his family.

Recently his wife, Annabel, also announced that she has been diagnosed with this disease and Bill Gates, who is donating $100 million to help find a cure for Alzheimers, announced that his father has the illness.

This has led to a increased public discourse about Dementia and Alzheimer’s. The BBC has recently published an excellent article defining dementia, identifying the causes and discussing challenges with finding a cure.

As we are all well aware many of our loved ones suffer from varying levels of dementia. We thought you might be interested in reading more about it in the BBC’s science section
